EU advances new Ecodesign standard for standby modes

The European Commission has submitted a Standardisation Request (SReq) linked to the Ecodesign framework, focusing on energy consumption in off mode, standby mode, and networked standby.

The aim is to update and harmonise measurement methods and requirements for how much electricity products may consume when not actively in use, including connected devices that remain “listening” on networks.

The work is expected to lead to stricter energy efficiency requirements for a wide range of products, from consumer electronics to smart appliances, with the goal of reducing unnecessary electricity consumption in EU households and businesses.

You can find the document here.

Stakeholders who believe that this request should not be approved are invited to contact us no later than 20 May 2026. Please notice this is just for ITS members.
