ETSI has developed a new version of ETSI EN 301 721, a harmonised standard for Mobile Earth Stations (MES) providing Low Bit Rate Data Communications (LBRDC) via Low Earth Orbiting (LEO) satellites operating in frequency bands below 1 GHz.

The standard covers different types of earth stations, including fixed-based stations, vehicle-mounted stations and portable equipment. It specifies technical characteristics and measurement methods for areas such as unwanted emissions, receiver performance, adjacent channel selectivity and blocking characteristics.

The new version revises the previous standard following comments from the European Commission. As a harmonised standard, it provides a means of demonstrating compliance with radio spectrum requirements under the EU Radio Equipment Directive (RED).
