ETSI has published a new standard, ETSI EN 304 132 V1.1.0, which establishes product‑specific requirements for life cycle assessments (LCA) of smartphones.
The standard was developed within the Technical Committee for Environmental Engineering (EE) and focuses specifically on Mobile ICT devices.
The purpose of this new framework is to provide manufacturers and operators with a harmonised and transparent method to measure, calculate and report a mobile phone’s total climate and environmental footprint – from raw material extraction and manufacturing to use and end‑of‑life recycling. This represents an important step towards harmonising environmental reporting within the telecom industry and facilitating the transition to a more circular economy.
