ETSI approves new Standardisation Request for FRMCS – a key step for Europe’s railways!

ETSI has formally approved the updated Standardisation Request from the European Commission concerning the Future Railway Mobile Communication System (FRMCS) – the next-generation railway communication system based on 5G. This means that ETSI has officially started working on the harmonised European standards (ENs) specified in the request.

The decision marks an important milestone in the European effort to enable cross-border, safe, and efficient rail transport. It also connects to the long-standing commitment of the Swedish Transport Administration (Trafikverket) in the development of FRMCS – a commitment we highlighted in an interview with Sam Berggren, railway expert at Trafikverket.

Through its membership in ETSI via ITS, Trafikverket actively contributes to European standardisation and helps ensure that future railway communication is built on common, interoperable solutions.
